The E-Agle TRT team awarded at the Computer Vision Projects Expo 2024 for its autonomous perception system

May 2025 - Engineering is not only learned from books, but also and above all through practical experience. And it is precisely this added value offered by Team E-Agle TRT, which recently received the ‘Best Overall Project’ award at the Computer Vision Projects Expo 2024 organized by ReadyTensor for the development of an advanced perception system for autonomous driving.

The University of Trento's Formula Student team, founded in 2016, aims to design, build, and compete with other international university teams through the creation of electric single-seaters. The constant drive for improvement has led some members to develop a localization system for autonomous driving competitions.

By integrating Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (Visual SLAM) with object recognition techniques based on neural networks, the system uses YOLOv8 for the detection and classification of cones, which are essential for vehicle navigation during Driverless Cup competitions; the architecture is completed by OrbSLAM3 for localization and track map construction. Data is acquired via an Intel RealSense D455 RGB-D camera that provides both visual and depth information. The data stream is processed in real time, allowing the car to accurately locate itself within the circuit marked out by cones. The integration of visual feature tracking and object classification provides a detailed representation of the environment, making the system reliable even in variable lighting conditions or complex scenarios.

In addition to the technical result, the real value of this experience lies in the training it offers the students involved: being part of E-Agle TRT means being able to put the knowledge learned in the classroom into practice, face real challenges, and collaborate with colleagues in a context that simulates the world of industry. From design to track testing, each phase allows students to develop cross-disciplinary skills and acquire an engineering mindset geared towards problem solving.

This recognition confirms the quality of the team's work and highlights how practical learning is an essential element in the training of future engineers. Team E-Agle represents a unique opportunity for students at the University of Trento, offering them the chance to put theory into practice.

E-Agle TRT triumphs at Formula Student Switzerland: first place overall in the Junior Cup

July 2025 — E-Agle Trento Racing Team takes the top step of the podium at Formula Student Switzerland 2025, winning first place overall in the Junior Cup thanks to high-level performances in all static tests.

The team strategically chose to participate in the Junior Cup, presenting the project “on paper” without bringing the car to the track. This decision was fully consistent with the two-year “Two Years One Vision” program, designed to validate the new design and organizational approach before making the leap into the more demanding competitions of 2026.

“We decided to start from scratch, building a structured and documented design process capable of overcoming the limitations of old technical choices,” explains outgoing team leader Chiara Sabaini, emphasizing the importance of the methodical work undertaken in recent months.

The results confirmed the validity of the path taken:

  • 1st place in the Engineering Design Event
  • 2nd place in the Business Plan Presentation
  • 3rd place in the Cost Event

This combination allowed E-Agle TRT to take the lead in the overall Junior Cup standings. “I am very proud of the work done by the whole team. The results of FS Switzerland show that we are moving in the right direction,” adds Sabaini. “We have made great strides, laying a solid foundation for even more ambitious goals.”

After this success, the team is already looking ahead to the next event: in September, E-Agle TRT will participate in Formula SAE Italy in Varano de' Melegari, the “home” race that will be a new test of the path they have taken.

E-Agle TRT on the podium at Formula SAE Italy: important confirmations in Varano de’ Melegari

September 2025 — After an excellent season debut in Switzerland, E-Agle Trento Racing Team consolidates its growth at Formula SAE Italy 2025, achieving two podiums in the static tests and a prestigious third place overall in the Junior Cup.

In the Business Plan Presentation, the team earned the judges' appreciation for the solidity of its proposal and the quality of its presentation, receiving targeted suggestions for achieving a level ever closer to a real presentation for potential investors. “If you want a spoiler, we've already started thinking about next year's Business Plan,” say the team members, a sign of a path already geared towards continuous improvement.

There was also excellent feedback in the Engineering Design Event, where E-Agle TRT shone in particular in the overall vehicle concept and vehicle dynamics, achieving the maximum score available (25/25). The areas in which the team invested most during the year were in fact among those most appreciated by the technical committee.

In the Cost Report, despite some variability in the evaluation criteria typical of different competitions, the team will be able to use the feedback to further refine its method in view of future challenges.

“The Varano competition was very useful for the team's growth,” comments new team leader Nicolò Marconi. “This year we had a major turnover, with about 75% of the members joining at the end of 2024: for many, it was their first competitive experience. Preparing for the static tests and experiencing a week of competition was essential to understanding what Formula SAE really means and to getting pumped up for next year. Moreover, a third place overall is a result we can be satisfied with.”

With a renewed, motivated team and strengthened by the feedback gathered, E-Agle TRT concludes a season of rapid and concrete growth, already looking ahead to the challenges of 2026.

E-Agle TRT with Arroweld at the Vicenza Industry Expo

October 2025 - From October 28 to 31, E-Agle Trento Racing Team ASD took part in the Vicenza Industry Expo, an annual event focused on welding techniques and small-to-medium-sized enterprises.

This opportunity was made possible thanks to the support of Arroweld, a leading company in the welding technology sector and a key sponsor of our project. Thanks to Arroweld, some members of the team were able to experience the fair as protagonists, independently managing a stand inside the Vicenza-based company's pavilion.

The experience was valuable on several fronts: it allowed us to present E-Agle TRT and the world of Formula Student to a new audience, curious and interested in technology applied to engineering. These four days gave us the opportunity to interact with other companies present, discovering different realities and approaches, from which to draw inspiration to further grow our project.

During the Expo, we exhibited Hydra, our latest single-seater, decorated with the logos of all the partners who support the team. It was an ideal showcase to promote companies that believe in young people and innovation. For companies such as Arroweld, investing in university projects means coming into direct contact with future professionals, building relationships that can turn into concrete collaborations in the world of work.

“The team members who attended the event in Vicenza came back enthusiastic,” comments Thomas Dossi, a member of the team's management department. “The event was not only a showcase, but also an opportunity for personal and technical growth, useful for expanding their knowledge in the mechanical and technological fields, experiencing firsthand the industrial environment that represents the beating heart of our sector.”

A heartfelt thank you to Arroweld for making all this possible and for consistently believing in the value of training and innovation.

Job&Orienta: work and passion in one place

November 2025 - From November 26 to November 28, E-Agle Trento Racing Team ASD participated in Job&Orienta in Verona. This was made possible thanks to Randstad, an employment agency, which hosted us at their stand.

This annual fair helps students orient themselves towards the world of university and work through contact with representatives from various companies. During the 34th edition of this event, our team presented its project, introducing those interested to Formula Student and answering questions and curiosities. One of our goals was to guide new students in their university choices and perhaps convince them to consider a future at E-Agle TRT. The team members present showed Chimera Evo and talked about our Hydra single-seater. They also mentioned and introduced the new single-seater we are working on.

“It was a great opportunity to meet members and former members of other teams like ours and learn firsthand about the work of companies,” says Alessandro Bridi, Head of Embedded and Human Resources.

Dealing with people who share our passion is really important to us and motivates us to continue improving and working hard to achieve our goals.

The other team members who took part also showed their enthusiasm for this initiative and were satisfied with the work they did.

Job&Orienta was a wonderful opportunity for everyone, both those who participated and those who did not, as we were able to introduce our work to even more people. We would like to thank Randstad once again for making this possible!
